A public reference to start with

The municipality lists the Caminho ao Mar “Ciro Ledo Barbosa” walkway in Taubaté as a coastal viewing possibility. Check access conditions and stay in permitted areas.

Instituto VIVA’s deck is a fixed-point research facility. Do not assume unrestricted entry or a public programme: confirm current visitor arrangements with the institution.

What to look for

Choose an unobstructed view without approaching exposed cliffs or edges. Binoculars help with distant blows and surface movements. Be patient: not every patch of foam is an animal.

No time of day guarantees whales. Light, wind, rain, distance and the state of the horizon affect what you can see. Also read the whale-season guide.

Restaurants and accommodation

Before booking a room or table for possible sightings, check which area has an open view, whether access is permitted and whether reliable local records exist. A scenic pool is not automatically a validated whale-watching location.

See Scalea’s tips for restaurants with sea views, never a sighting guarantee, and how to choose where to stay.

Respect wildlife and the place

Observe without trying to attract or chase animals or entering the water to reach them. Do not cross barriers, obstruct access or enter private land without permission.

Keep a safe position when taking photos. Use zoom instead of moving towards an edge. Take your litter away and respect people who live or work nearby.

Land or sea?

They are different experiences. On land, you scan the area visible from a fixed point. At sea, a guided trip depends on navigation conditions and wildlife-watching rules, with no promised encounter.

Compare them in where to see whales and explore Scalea’s whale-watching experience.

Sightings are never guaranteed. Location references do not certify current opening, unrestricted access or frequency of whales.
