The Alcatrazes Archipelago Wildlife Refuge was created in 2016 and is managed by ICMBio. It protects marine and island habitats with more than 1,300 recorded species, large concentrations of fish and one of the most important seabird areas on the coast.
What you can do
Visits follow ICMBio rules and take place with licensed operators and guides. Authorized activities include boat visits, snorkeling and scuba diving at designated spots. Dolphins, turtles and whales may also appear, but as wild animals, sightings are not guaranteed.
Best time to go
The refuge can be visited all year. From November to May sea conditions are usually better for sailing and diving; humpback whales and pelagic birds are more common in autumn and winter. Each departure depends on sea conditions on the day.
