One of Ilhabela’s best-known landscapes, Castelhanos brings together open sea, Atlantic Forest, a traditional caiçara community and an access route that is part of the experience itself.
What is Castelhanos like?
The beach lies on the eastern side of Ilhabela, facing the open sea. According to the city government, it is about 1.7 km long and is known for the heart shape seen from Mirante do Coração. The sea can have strong swell, although some sections are more sheltered.

Access is possible by boat, by authorized 4x4 tours along the Estrada-Parque dos Castelhanos, or by trail. For those who want to explore the coast and combine the beach with sea stops, arriving by boat offers a different perspective on the island’s geography.
Caiçara culture and cuisine
Castelhanos is home to a traditional caiçara community. Tourism and fishing are among the local economic activities, and there are family-run restaurants and simple accommodations. Respecting the community, its paths and the environment is an essential part of the visit.

Beyond the shape of the bay, the viewpoints, Atlantic Forest and community presence make Castelhanos much more than a beach stop. On suitable sea days, navigation allows views of remote stretches of the east coast.
